Heritage and Renewal

Saint Nicholas Greek Catholic High School and Dormitory – Nyíregyháza

Greek Catholic education in Nyíregyháza has roots dating back to 1806. Over time, the school expanded and became one of the most respected educational institutions of the city, educating generations of children – Catholic, Reformed, and Jewish alike. Its history reflects resilience, community spirit, and continuous renewal.

The historic building on Bethlen Gábor Street, once home to the Greek Catholic school and later the Saint Nicholas Kindergarten, Elementary School, and High School, will now gain a new mission. It will be transformed into the Religious Tourism Center of Nyíregyháza, hosting diocesan exhibitions, cultural events, and offering space for research in its archives. This way, the building will continue to be a place of education and culture, but in a new form that bridges past and present.
